Introduction
Maine’s Civil Rights Act provides for civil action (by the state attorney general or by private lawsuit) for certain forms of harassment or hate crimes that interfere with a person’s constitutional rights. For example, where a WMC victim is specifically targeted because of his or her race, color, religion, ancestry, nationality, gender, sexual orientation, or mental, physical or sensory handicaps, the Civil Rights Act may provide relief.
